Director of Special Education–Akron

The Director of Special Education will assist schools that Cambridge Education Group manages that are committed to the ongoing academic development and well-being of their students, teachers, and staff. The Director will provide strategic and instructional leadership and will oversee management of the Special Education operations of the schools that Cambridge manages.


Responsibilities
The Director of Special Education is responsible for the leadership, administration, and supervision of the special education program and services. He/she ensures high standards and expectations of student achievement and is accountable for student achievement.

The Director of Special Education agrees with and is committed to the academic goals and philosophy of Cambridge Education Group. He or she understands, abides by, and implements the policies, directives, and guidelines set forth by the management company. He or she must also:

  • Leadership and Operations
    • Provide ethical and motivational leadership appropriate to the cultural and political context in which Cambridge operates
    • Ensure responsive and effective systems and management of people and systems such that all students, parents, teachers, and staff are well supported
    • Ensure an orderly, motivational, and aspirational culture and a strong school community where teaching, learning, and healthy relationships can thrive
    • Develop and implement Special Education policies
    • Facilitate and maintain professional internal and external relations with the board, donors, and local and national communities
    • Develop mutually supportive relationships with all customers, characterized by good communication strategies
    • Establish and communicate a company-wide philosophy of least restrictive environment for serving special needs students
    • Guide the development and implementation of long-range and short-range plans for achieving special education goals and objectives in alignment with the company’s strategic plan
    • Monitor the development and implementation of all aspects of the special education program process
    • Collaborate with school-based administrators and Cambridge management regarding the discipline of students with disabilities
    • Review federal/state legislation/regulations related to Special Education; identify and share the impact of changes to Cambridge management
    • Maintain open lines of communication regarding special education with all interested parties; respond to concerns of parents, staff, and all other customers in a timely manner
    • Conduct ongoing needs assessments, collect and analyze data, use pertinent data to refine and improve operational functions and services; evaluate special education program initiatives
  • Administrative:
    • Prepare reports and information for the company and the boards including the Special Education Annual Plan and the application for federal funds
    • Coordinate the implementation of federal and state grant applications and manage appropriate IDEA funds
    • Develop, monitor, supervise and manage all aspects of the annual budgets for special education and audiology services; coordinate budget requests with individual schools relative to instructional programs
    • Facilitate research regarding trends and best practices to support appropriate recommendations for student success through rigorous, innovative, and technological programs
    • Maintain confidentiality concerning all student and staff information and in all professional matters
  • Facility and Personnel Development
    • Plan, implement and facilitate professional development for school staff who are assigned the responsibility of delivering and overseeing the special education services in their school; involve staff in continuous improvement through self-evaluation and goal setting
    • Advise on the design, furnishings, and equipment for special education classrooms and facilities
    • Engage all new staff members in effective induction procedures and facilitate continued professional development through ongoing training opportunities
    • Provide strategic leadership for the Special Education program for improvement and development
    • Oversee and direct the allocation of special education staff to schools in accordance with state/local standards and school needs
    • Be part of a whole company team, actively involved in decision-making on the preparation and development of policies and programs of study, teaching materials, resources, methods of teaching and pastoral arrangements
  • Perform all other job duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree required, CAS/EdS/EdD/Phd preferred
  • 3–5 years experience in direct development of IEPs
  • 3–5 years of administrative/supervisory experience with significant areas of responsibility involving exceptional learners
  • Teaching experience
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience in providing professional development trainings in areas of school improvement
  • A demonstrated record of success
  • Passion for working with, and teaching, youth of various social, educational, and economic backgrounds and levels
  • Willingness to go above and beyond to support students in achieving academic goals
  • Commitment to continued personal and professional growth
  • Proficiency in the use of technology

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
